“History is a thriving subject at Queen’s at both undergraduate and graduate levels and we are a leading centre for historical teaching and research. History includes among its staff leading authorities on a wide range of periods and subjects, from the ancient world to the twentieth century and including African, American and continental European history, with particular strengths in the histories of Britain and Ireland and the history of religion. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, History at Queens was awarded a grade 5, indicating a high proportion of research publications of national and international excellence.
At the same time the School is committed to teaching of the highest quality. Information on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is available in the Prospective Students section of this website. A review of the school’s teaching, conducted in 2002 by two leading specialists from outside the university, praised ‘the evident enthusiasm of students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, for the learning experience they are receiving … the teaching is fully informed by recent scholarship, and students are made aware of the methods and principles by which the professional historian works.’
History at Queen’s includes around thirty teaching staff, over seventy postgraduates and around 400 undergraduates. The department is diverse and stimulating, without being overly large – it has a reputation for being friendly and supportive.
